At Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club, we’re always looking for ways to help our members have a better game on the golf course. If you’re looking to take your skills to the next level, a club fitting could be a game changer. Here are a few key facts about club fittings and why getting fitted can be beneficial.

Club Fitting Benefits
Every person has a unique swing, so it’s important to have clubs that are properly designed for your body and style of play. You can find the right clubs by going through a club fitting appointment, a process where a trained fitter will develop a set of clubs perfectly matched to your swing. This can be done either by a fitter working for a club manufacturer who will fit you for that brand specifically, or a fitter who will fit for a variety of clubs regardless of the brand. A properly fitted club will complement your swing, ensure consistency and can improve any golfer’s play in terms of distance and scores.

Golfer Analysis
The first step in a club fitting is for the fitter to analyze the golfer. The fitter will conduct an interview to better understand style of play, assess the current clubs and conduct a thorough analysis of the swing and stance. Special software and launch data technology tools are used in this process, some popular ones being FlightScope and TECFIT. These programs measure and examine strength, athletic ability and individual swing mechanics.

The fitter also needs to understand the player’s improvement goals to know what they prioritize and want to get out of the fitting. These goals can include increased distance, accuracy, consistency, trajectory and feel.

Finding the Perfect Fit
During the fitting, the club fitter will study every feature of the club and test things like the lie angle and shaft flexibility and length. Many measurements of club features are also analyzed, two of which are the shaft and gap wedge.

Shaft flexibility and weight can greatly impact a golfer’s game. For example, a shaft that is on the stiffer side will benefit a player with a fast swing, whereas a more flexible shaft will be better for a slow swing. Shaft weight is equally as essential. A light shaft allows for more distance and a heavy shaft is often preferred if you want more control. During the shaft analysis, both swing and launch characteristics are analyzed using launch data technology. Once all factors are examined, the fitter will crunch the numbers and determine the best shaft to boost distance, feel and control.

The gap wedge analysis will improve short approach performance and shot scoring around the green. This analysis consists of key elements such as sole design, loft and club length to select the proper type and loft of wedges. Gap wedge material is also a key factor. A steel wedge is more durable and offers more control, whereas a graphite gap wedge will give more distance. Each wedge length is also measured to further develop distance and control.
