Award winning hiking and beautiful scenery is only a two-hour drive north from the gates of our private golf community at Superstition Mountain Golf and Country Club. 14 miles north of Payson is one of Northern Arizona’s most popular destinations, and no it isn’t the Grand Canyon. If you’re looking for a great day trip, head on up to Tonto Natural State Park.

Discovered in the late 1800’s, the Tonto Natural Bridge stretches more than 400 feet long and it towers more than 180 feet above the canyon floor. It is believed to be the largest natural travertine bridge in the world. The state park offers a wide variety of hiking trails for adventurers of every level. The four available trails vary in length and intensity and offer spectacular wildlife and nature views throughout. The most popular trail, the Pine Creek Trail, is a moderate, half mile-long trail that leads to the canyon floor and underneath the bridge - highly recommended!

Pack a lunch or plenty of snacks
Roughly ten miles away from the nearest restaurants or services, it’s wise to pack some snacks or a lunch to munch on while taking
in the wonderful views. The state park has multiple observation decks and picnic areas to rest and replenish, just remember to pack out all your trash with you.

Bring plenty of water
While all the trails can be completed in about an hour, hydration is of upmost importance when hiking, regardless of your surroundings. Free your hands and invest in a solid hiking pack that holds a hydration reservoir. CamelBak or Osprey are two brands we highly recommend.

Don’t forget a camera
Tonto Natural Bridge State Park is home to beautiful sights no matter where you look, take these memories home with you, bring a camera!

Dress appropriately
The average highs in the park for November are mid 60s with lows dropping down to the 30s. Hiking shoes with stable ankle support are highly recommend and layer appropriately to stay comfortable throughout your hike.

No pets allowed
Per health regulations, pets are not allowed on any of the trails, so leave Fido at home for this adventure.

To round out your trip, we highly recommend stopping off in Payson for local eats and drinks before embarking your way back to our beautiful gated golf course community. Rated as the #1 restaurant in Payson on TripAdvisor.com, Fargo’s Steakhouse is highly touted as a great place for lunch or dinner by visitors and residents alike. Offering guests delectable steaks and seafood, you’ll be on your way home with a satisfied appetite.
